Background to the book
I wrote a version of this story for my youngest son in 2015 as we couldn’t find many books with characters called Kit.
Here are some of Kit’s drawings from the first version, which had the shipmates called Sol and Daniel after two of his friends:
I entered the current version of the story into the 2023 Scottish Association of Writers conference competition, where it was commended. Maggie Bolton was the adjudicator for the competition and we have since collaborated on this book.
I've found the process of creating a picture book both enjoyable and challenging. I’ve learned lots of skills regarding layout of text and images in order to capture the essence of the story. I’ve had great advice from my two mentors: Sophie Hannah (bestselling author and creator of the Dream Author programme) and Pauline Tait (award-winning children’s author).
My son Kit is currently designing a combat robot, which is an expensive hobby, so proceeds from book sales will help fund his project.

Captain Kit featured in an Instagram book tour organised by Love Books Tours between 17th and 30th May 2024. The reviews are shown below:
📚Captain Kit 💛
Captain Kit loves sweet stuff, and enjoys to eat and eat and eat! His crew
mates worry if he keeps eating, the ship will sink, so one day they throw his
sweet treats overboard. A monster gets hit by the cakes, and isn’t happy with
the waste of food; but is invited onto the ship with his healthy recipe book,
and cooks the crew some healthy meals, instead of snacking on sweets!
An interesting tale that took a direction I was not expecting! The
illustrations are fun and bright, and the text is easy to read and rhymes
great, which make for a good read!
Thankyou to @lovebookstours for inviting us

What a gorgeous children's book!
I adore children's books with amazing illustrations and these are incredibly
engaging and cute!
This story is incredibly fun with the rhymes and the cake but offers a more
serious layer about eating healthily... you can't eat snacks all the time!
This also a good book that can be a multi-age book... 3 year olds will love it
being read to them and looking at the pictures while older children will enjoy
discussing the pictures or attempting to read the book themselves!
A lovely book for children of all ages!
Brilliant read!

⭐ BOOK TOUR REVIEW ⭐
Thank you again @kathryn.holme and @lovebookstours for having us on this review tour and for the amazing gift pack.
Arthur and I really enjoyed reading this book. Arthur is in his pirate phase so
it was no surprise that he wanted to be Captain Kit.
As I was reading this story to Arthur he had his own little thoughts and
inputs. He kept telling me that they'll be sick soon 😂
Captain Kit is written wonderfully, the whole story book is set out in a way to
engage with the children. The illustrations were stunning and the colours
really popped off the page.
Arthur enjoyed it so much that he had to look through the pictures again and
again, retelling the story to his teddies.
Pirates and cake –
what could be more fun! Captain Kit loves cakes and sweets, but they are not
good for him, so his fellow shipmates Joy and Pedro hide the food one day, and
even resort to firing it overboard.
“While Captain Kit was sleeping,
They grabbed the cakes and buns.
They fired them all into the sea
From cannons and musket guns.”
But they never expected what happened next.
This charming book is written in rhyme so it’s easy to read out aloud, while
slightly older children will be able to read it for themselves.

📚BOOK REVIEW📚
CAPTAIN KIT by Kathryn Holme and illustrated by Maggie Bolton
My next review today is of the lovely children’s picture book Captain Kit
by @kathryn.holme.
My review is part of the @lovebookstours review tour.
Blurb
Captain Kit loves snacking.
Shipmates Joy and Pedro hide the food one day with a surprising outcome.
A rhythmically-told story for 3 to 5 year olds featuring pirate adventures and
cake.
Captain Kit loves to eat cakes, biscuits, sweets and anything else that’s
unhealthy. He’s also getting larger and more unhealthy as. Shipmates Joy and
Pedro decided to take matters into their own hands by throwing all the snacks
overboard. A big sea monster gets angry at having all the junk food in his sea
so climbs aboard to make healthy food for Captain Kit and help him change his
ways. I really liked the role reversal in this story with the children showing
the grown up how to eat healthily instead of the other way around. I thought
the monster chef was also quite cool and that kids would love it! The
illustrations are bright and colourful, very appealing to children. The book is
written in vocabularies that is perfect for early readers. This is an excellent
book for youngsters who are just beginning to read independently and enjoy
reading. It as a great message as well.
Thanks to @lovebookstours and @kathryn.holme for my #gifted copy for

Thanks so much to @lovebookstours for sending me the copy of Captain Kit by Kathryn Holme, @kathryn.holme .

REVIEW:
I read Captain Kit with our youngest Daughter, Amelie-Rose, and we both really
enjoyed the story.
We liked that the story was all in rhyme as it always makes children's books at
bit more fun.
It's a book absolutely packed with lots of beautiful, colourful illustrations,
like all children's picture books should.
Our favourite character was definitely Captain Kit and we liked that the story
had an important theme. That eating too much isn't good for you and that
exercise and health food are.
The text is big, bold, easy to read and none of the words are too complicated
for this age group.
A big 5 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 's from us.
☠️ Book Review ☠️
Our littles really enjoyed this story, especially with the cakes and sweets. It
was a great conversation starter about how some foods taste really good but
might not be the best fuel for our body. We also used the story to extend the
conversation into healthy eating and exercise to help us keep in good shape.
We loved how the story rhymed and our 5 year old couldn't help but sing along
as he was reading it. It's a good length for a bedtime story, keeps their
attention for the right amount of time and they enjoyed the illustrations too.

Review:
Bright and bold this book captures the attention of children straight away.
The flowing rhymes and repetitive phrases also add to the engagement of young
readers who will love to join in as you read together.
Captain Kit enjoys a sweet treat but it’s not the best way for a swashbuckling
young one to live. When his friends try to help they hit a bit of a snag (or
rather a large scary one). But there’s a positive message amongst the fun and
humour - focusing on the importance of healthy eating and exercise to help keep
you fit!Captain Kit is a great way to encourage young children to explore
healthy foods. After all if it’s good enough for a pirate then it has to be
pretty good!
🍰 BOOK REVIEW - Captain Kit by @kathryn.holme 🍰
Yo Ho Ho for Captain Kit aboard his ship the Yum Yum ⚓
Etta loved this book and I loved reading it to her ! It's easy for a child to
follow because of the rhyming and also, the repetitive 'Yo Ho Ho' part means
they get fully involved in the words !
The illustrations are great and we loved spotting all the different items,
animals and food on each page !
Go and pick it up for your little one now 🫶🏼

Tour: @lovebookstours
Today is my turn on the @lovebookstours for this very sweet (pun intended!) book - Captain Kit
Captain Kit loves to eat! He eats, and eats and eats and eats…… All he eats is
sweet treats. His crew mates are worried that if he keeps eating treats their
ship will sink.
When a sea monster gets hit by the cakes that are being thrown off the ship, he
is not happy! He suggests he becomes part of the crew and bring his healthy
cook book. He starts to cook healthy meals instead of letting the captain eat
snacks!
A really important healthy eating message and I think it will get a lot of
children on board with it.
The illustrations really stand out and the rhyming in the story is brilliant!
Perfect for a bedtime read or to be in an EYFS classroom.
Thank you to @kathryn.Holme for the
beautiful gifts with the book, my tiny human loved reading the book with me and
decorating the sword and ship ♥️

Review:
Captain Kit is a cute read all about pirates and cake, two things I think young
children love to read about. I found the ending about healthy eating a nice
touch.
I particularly loved that the story rhymed as it gave it a better nice rhythm
as you moved through the pages, quite sing song like.
The pictures are bright and colourful just what young children are drawn to
whilst an adult reads to them.
All in all it makes the perfect bedtime story!
📚 Book Review📚
It has come to my turn to review Captain Kit!
This is a very cute children's book, that is very engaging and well thought
out. The pictures tell the story without the need to read the words, which
makes it two books in one!
Both my boys thought it was very funny, and both enjoyed the monster eating all
the cake and sweets.
Both my boys rated this book "A million out of 10"

📖🏴☠️ REVIEW TIME 🏴☠️📖
Captain Kit by Kathryn Holme
My honest thoughts
☠️This is such an exciting adventure! As soon as it came I read it to my 2
year old son and he loved it! Laughing away and babbling away..
Being a sweet tooth I loved this story and sailing on the seas on yum yum!
Kit is an awesome character, his definitely a favourite with us!
I loved the rhyming aspect as that made it easier to read, smoother if you
will.. the illustrations keep the little ones engaged and helps visualise the
story.
Also loved the lesson learnt of how healthier food options can save one's life!
And who dont love a helpful big dragon?!..☠️
We created our own sword and ship, with our shipmates - one being a cheeky
icecream loving monkey, a pirate shark that loves crispy seaweed, and Captain
mac and cheese and the cleaner mavey..
Massive thank you for this opportunity 🙏 ❤️
Review for
'Captain Kit' by Kathryn Holme and illustrated by Maggie Bolton.
What an absolutely fun, funny and brilliantly
illustrated children's book!! It is a fantastic story which is perfect to read
all year around! One of the things that I really liked about this book and what
stood out for me is the fact that it carries the important message about eating
healthily and how although Captain Kit loved to snack away his shipmates Joey
and Pedro were concerned about him and his weight sinking the ship and came up
with a plan that went wrong but worked out perfectly for them all! We all loved
the fact that it is a rhyming book which makes it even more fun to read and it
is also a great way to help children read. My children had loads of fun
guessing what the next rhyming words were!! It wasn't just myself that enjoyed
reading it but my 11 year old son and also my 6 year old twin boys. It was
written in a way that is easy for children and adults to read and we all took
it in turns to read a page. We had loads of fun naming all the different things
that the children could see in the photos and naming all the colours as well as
having a good laugh about the story itself, especially the fun "sea
shanty" repetitions!!. It truly is an amazing and fantastic book and I
would say it is suitable for any child from the age of baby - 8 years above.
This book is lovely and short and can be a quick read or be made into a fun
long read whichever the reader wishes. The font is a nice style and size making
it easy for adults and children to see and read too which is definitely a bonus
as I have struggled with some fonts that authors have used in children's books
in the past. We all loved the absolutely brilliant illustrations on each and
every page which were colourful and eye catching, especially the food canon
page!!! I read the paperback version of this book which came directly from the
author with a fantastic selection of items such as a sword and a boat which the
boys had lots of fun decorating (pictures to follow so keep your eyes out on
IG!!) along with stickers which the boys loved!!.
REVIEW PART 2....!!. I would definitely
recommend getting a physical copy of this book for the kids as it is absolutely
brilliant quality and the kids will love flipping through the pages and looking
back and forth at the pictures!! It would be a perfect book for children to be
read to by their teachers in school as well as friends and family members. Let
your children's imaginations come alive with this fantastic book which teaches
them the importance of healthy eating in a fun and rhyming way!!. I really
cannot wait to read more books by the very talented Kathryn to my children (and
for myself) and hope that she is busy writing the next one already! I also have
to mention that I loved reading the info that came with the book about the fact
that Kathryn actually wrote this book because they couldn't find many books
with characters called Kit!! What an absolutely brilliant thing to do and I am
definitely in the same boat with a son called Malaki!! The twins are called
Hunter and Ryder, which I have seen mainly in adult books but also in some kids
programmes. An absolutely brilliant book with an amazing "birth"
story!!
My 11 year old son Malaki had this to say about this book:
I really liked reading this book by Kathryn. I like the fact that Captain Kit
is taught about healthy eating and even cooked for by a %^%^! I don't want to
give anything anyway) but it was so fun and funny! I loved reading it to my
brothers who are 6 year old and looking at all the brilliant drawings with
them! I am taking this book to school to show the teachers as I think it is a
good book for teachers to read in classes.
Congratulations Kathryn on writing an absolutely absolutely fantastic
children's book and to Maggie for her brilliant illustrations!! Here is to your
next success 🥂 that we are all looking forward to seeing and reading!
Overall a fantastically illustrated, fun, humorous children's book with a
lesson to be learnt!
🏴☠️ Yo ho ho! 🏴☠️
It’s our turn on the @lovebookstours book tour today for Captain Kit by @kathryn.holme today.
Captain Kit LOVES sweet treats: his sword is made out of chocolate and his ship
is appropriately named the Yum Yum and is full of sweets, chocolate and cakes.
But his snacking is getting out of control! When his shipmates, Joy and Pedro,
decide enough is enough, they throw the snacks over board which leads to surprising
consequences!
This is a really cute rhyming picture book. It’s aimed at 2-5 year olds but
Harry (almost 7) still enjoyed it. They both liked joining in with the
repetitive lines throughout the book, putting on their best ‘Yo ho ho’ pirate
voices!
The creative activities sent with the book definitely saved us on a very wet
and rainy morning this morning - both children loved opening the scrolls to
find their pirate challenges!

Captain Kit by Kathryn Holmes
Captain Kit was such an enjoyable read, I read this book with my two daughters
aged 4 and 6.
The girls found it easy to follow the storyline and really like how the story
rhyme. The illustrations were bold and colourful and very appealing to the
girls.
As a parent, I found that the important message that came across within the
storyline, that eating healthy and exercise is good for you to be very
understandable for young children.
Masie ( aged 4)
I loved how colourful the pictures are, and the story was fun.

🏴☠️ BOOK REVIEW 🏴☠️
“Captain Kit”
By Kathryn Holme.
Genre: Children’s Picture Book (3-5 years).
Pages: 32.
Our Rating: 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
I read this book with my 4 year old son, Elliot. When I asked him what he liked
about the book he said:
“I liked the chocolate sword, I would definitely have ate that! Oh and all the
cake too! I like that he decided to be healthy, I like eating fruit and
vegetables too”.
As a parent reading this to my child, I found this book so much fun for us to
read together and spurred lots of conversation on foods, what we like to eat
and what is healthy and what is unhealthy. It was so nice to see a story make
Elliot laugh too and just light up his little face!
Short, fun & brilliantly illustrated!
Thanks so much for the gifted copy with special extras and for having us as
part of the book tour to read and review this book!

Captain Kit review 🏴☠️
I read this book with my five year old and we both absolutely adored it! It’s
definitely a story that we will read again and again.
Aimed at children aged 3-5, Captain Kit is a super cute rhyming story all about
a pirate who can’t stop snacking!
Captain Kit loves his snacks so much that his life revolves around sweet treats
- even his sword is made of chocolate and his ship is called the Yum Yum! 🍫
Captain Kit wants more cakes and more sweets, however one day his shipmates are
determined to put an end to Captain Kit’s constant snacking.
We loved the direction that the story went in and the way in which it promotes
healthy eating for children in a very fun way.
